VCI Chemistry Update: APRIL 6 - 9, 2020
During the week of April 6 - 9, VCI Chemistry video classes will be held at their regularly scheduled times on Tuesday, April 7, Wednesday, April 8, and Thursday, April 9, 2020. This does not apply to other VCI classes. I am involved in a division-wide administration meeting during the entire morning of Monday, April 6 and therefore will not be able to host video classes. Thursday is scheduled as a day for writing report cards for teachers so other classes are not scheduled for that day.

VCI CHEMISTRY Parents, Guardians and Students:
We find ourselves in unprecedented times. With classes suspended for the week proceeding and following Spring Break, necessity requires us to adapt the beginning of Term 2 at VCI to home study, with Spring Break sandwiched between. This update is intended to make parents, guardians and students aware of how that time of home study is structured for Chemistry classes at VCI.
Both Chemistry classes are working on topics that are increasingly mathematical in nature. It is important that students have access to materials to supplement instruction. New website pages have been created for both 40S Chemistry and 30S Chemistry students on this vcichemistry@ weebly.com webpage. On these pages, students will find PDF copies of the following:
In addition, links to a variety of instructional YouTube videos are provided for students to refer to as necessary. By Monday, the Assignment Calendars that students use throughout the semester for homework and assignment completion will be updated for students to use as a pacing guide to help them work through each topic during their time of home study.
Although they're not required to have them, many students, particularly Grade 12's, have paper copies of the linked PDF documents. Students that don't have paper copies and would like them are welcome to print them out at home, if that is possible, or they can pick up copies from the school's Main Office on Monday.
Chemistry students are registered with the REMIND app on their devices. This will be our primary means of communication. I can send group messages to all students at one time using the app. Individual communication between teacher and student are possible as well. Your child received a REMIND message from me today, asking them to direct you to our [email protected] website to learn about the plan for their upcoming home study schedule.
Finally, video lessons using ZOOM will permit classroom instruction to occur at home during our regularly scheduled class time. Grade 12's will have lessons on Monday and Wednesday between 9 and 10 a.m. with additional lessons or supplemental help arranged as needed. Grade 11 lessons will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 10 and 11 a.m., with Thursday and Friday lessons scheduled as required. No lessons are scheduled during Spring Break. Schedules for the week following spring break will be set before the end of next week.
This is a new experience for VCI students, parents and staff. I admire the way in which our school community has approached this situation and encourage everyone to stay close to home whenever possible, practice social distancing when around others and wash their hands often!
This is an important semester for all of our students, and in particular, for our Grade 12 students. In an effort to maintain contact with them during the home study period, each Grade 12 student will be contacted by a VCI teacher - often one of their classroom teachers - just to touch base to make sure the home study process is working for them, to see if they require additional support to successfully complete their graduation requirements, and to encourage them to keep in contact with their teachers so they get the classroom support they require as Grad draws ever closer.
I am available via email at [email protected] and via your child's REMIND throughout the school day. Questions are good - please ask!
